What FLAMES stands for, and where the game came from
FLAMES is an acronym for the six possible outcomes: Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies and Siblings. The game takes two names, removes the letters they have in common, and counts the survivors around those six letters until one remains.

The game spread through Indian schoolyards in the 1980s and 1990s on the backs of exercise books, and versions of it are played across Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Its closest American cousin is MASH, which uses the same idea of counting round a fixed list to reach a fixed set of outcomes.

The cancellation step is where most home-made calculators go wrong. Each occurrence cancels only once: if one name has two A's and the other has one, a single A is struck from each, and one A survives in the first name.
Order never matters. Both names are reduced before counting, and adding the two survivor counts together gives the same N whichever name you typed first. Across all 1,225 pairs we tested, swapping the names changed the result exactly zero times.

What actually comes up — 1,225 pairs measured
Enemies is the most common FLAMES result, and Love is one of the rarest. We ran every pair of 50 common Indian and Western first names — 1,225 pairs — through the same algorithm the calculator uses.

Two in five pairs return Enemies. One in twenty returns Love. Siblings is close to unreachable at 0.6%, which is roughly one pair in 175.
That is not a flaw in this implementation — it is a property of the game itself, and it has been true on every exercise book it was ever played on. No other flames calculator on the results page publishes these numbers, so most people playing have no idea the odds are stacked.
Why Enemies wins so often
Because the surviving letter count clusters in a narrow band, and that band lands on E. The count after cancellation is rarely extreme.

The median count is 7 and the range 6 to 8 covers 56.7% of all pairs. Because elimination is cyclic on a shrinking list, counts in that range converge on the same few survivors, and E survives more often than any other letter.
The practical consequence: a low Love rate is expected. Getting Love in FLAMES is a one-in-twenty event, so it means very little when it happens and even less when it does not.
The six outcomes and what each one means
Each letter has a traditional reading, and none of them is a prediction. The readings below are the ones the game has carried since it was played on paper.
- Friends — a genuine bond with nothing romantic in it. The fourth most common outcome, behind Enemies, Marriage and Affection.
- Love — the one the game is played for, and the second-rarest result at 5.1%.
- Affection — warmth that has not turned into a relationship. Often read as the stage before Love.
- Marriage — the long-term outcome, and far more common than Love at 21.7%.
- Enemies — the most frequent result of all. Traditionally read as friction rather than hatred.
- Siblings — family-style closeness. At 0.6%, the rarest result in the game.
Marriage coming up four times more often than Love is the detail most people find strange. It falls out of the elimination order and nothing else.
Is there a FLAMES percentage?
No. FLAMES itself has no percentage — the game outputs one of six words. There is no number anywhere in the rules; a percentage shown next to a FLAMES result always comes from a separate scoring system, not from the game.
Sites offering a flames love calculator percentage are usually running a separate name-compatibility score alongside the game and presenting the two together. That is not dishonest as long as it is labelled, but it is not FLAMES.

Can you play FLAMES with a date of birth?
No. FLAMES uses letters only, and there is no version of the rules that takes a date. Searches for a love calculator flames by date of birth are looking for something the game cannot do — there is nothing in the method that could consume a number.

- 2 Counting only one name's survivors instead of both. Roughly halves N and shifts the distribution towards F and L.
- 3 Starting the count from the letter after the last elimination versus restarting at F each round. This is the single biggest source of disagreement between calculators.
